Enabling Occupancy with Cisco (Room occupany)

Mapiq proudly integrates with Cisco Spaces, formerly known as DNA Spaces. This platform unifies Cisco's networking, sensors, and collaboration products into a cohesive cloud-based solution. As a recognized partner app within the Cisco App Center, this integration facilitates the sharing of occupancy data from Cisco directly into the Mapiq platform. In this article, we'll review what type of data you can measure and how to enable occupancy with Cisco within Mapiq.

Note: To access and utilize the occupancy features powered by Cisco Spaces within Mapiq, you must have the Occupancy add-on enabled for your subscription. If you’re uncertain whether this add-on is included in your package or wish to acquire it, please get in touch with your Customer Success Manager.

In the Cisco Spaces App Center there are two Mapiq apps available. This article describes the process of setting up Cisco for meeting room occupancy, called Mapiq meeting room devices which are used for meeting room insights and availability in the Here & Now. The second app, is for Office Attendance. You can find more information about that here.

Supported Occupancy with Cisco

Cisco's sensors are designed to measure two primary types of occupancy:

  • People Count

  • Availability

These sensors are available as both workspace- and room (PIR) sensors, and they can be connected to various building elements in Mapiq, including:

  • Desks

  • Areas

  • Facilities

  • Meeting Rooms

Connecting sensors to specific parts of your building is achieved through what we call “commissioning”. For a detailed guide, we recommend you look at our Commissioning Sensors article.

Enabling the Cisco Integration

Note: To enable the Cisco integration, you must possess administrative permissions within the Cisco App Center.

Mapiq's status as a Partner App in the Cisco App Center allows for a straightforward activation process.

Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Navigate to the Cisco App Center.

  2. Search for "Mapiq" and select "Activate."

  3. Indicate if you're an existing Mapiq-Cisco customer.

    • If yes, log in using your Mapiq credentials.

    • If no, choose the respective option. An email will be directed to Mapiq's Sales Team ([email protected]) for further assistance.

  4. Existing Mapiq users will be directed to a consent page. Review and grant the necessary permissions. Mapiq will be given access to the following:

    1. Activation Events

    2. Location

    3. Telepresence

    4. Camera Count

  5. Choose the desired locations for data sharing with Mapiq. If not all locations in the Cisco portal use Mapiq, you can also select a subset or locations.

  6. Provide consent for specific BLE device event sharing, as Mapiq subscribes to telemetry events.

  7. Finally, sign in to Mapiq to finalize the activation.

Once the activation process is complete, you can link Cisco Buildings in Mapiq.

Linking Cisco Buildings with Mapiq

Post-activation, you can begin linking Cisco buildings within Mapiq:

  1. Navigate to the desired building (Buildings > [Selected Building] > Sensors).

  2. Access the configuration panel by clicking the three dots icon next to "Sensors."

  3. Click the "+" icon adjacent to "Cisco" to initiate the linking process.

  4. A window will display all configured Cisco locations. To link a building to a zone, check the checkbox for the location. Depending on your Cisco configuration, you might need to expand the tree structure to find the building you seek.

  5. Select the desired locations and press "Save."

  6. After confirming your selections, all Cisco devices from the Cisco App Center will be auto-imported and prepped for commissioning.

Note: Already linked buildings are greyed out and non-selectable, with a link icon. If you accidentally linked the incorrect building, go to the building in Mapiq with the incorrect Cisco building association, open the linking menu, and deselect the Cisco building.

Importing & Commission Cisco Sensors

After the initial setup, existing and new sensors - already created in Cisco - are automatically imported into the associated building. Administrators receive notifications about new sensor imports, prompting them to commission these sensors within the building.

It’s worth noting that when it comes to commissioning these sensors within Mapiq, Cisco provides location suggestions to Mapiq based on the building linkage and the connection between the two platforms. However, administrators have the flexibility to override these suggestions if needed.
