PointGrab sensors are integral to the modern workspace, offering real-time occupancy data that can transform how spaces are utilized and managed. Integrated with Mapiq, these sensors provide insights into desk and room occupancy and people counting, enhancing space optimization and user experience. In this article, we’ll go into the preparation needed for PointGrab sensor installation, their technical specifications, and recommended location placements.
Sensor Options
CogniPoint™ Sensor
CogniPoint™ Sensors are powered over PoE cable and designed for ceiling mounting, offering a range of capabilities:
Desk Occupancy: Determines if a desk is occupied or available.
Room Occupancy: Provides room status and people count.
People Counting: Uses image-based sensing enriched with deep learning algorithms for anonymous counting.
Network & Installation Preparations
Before diving into the installation, it’s crucial to ensure your network is primed for the sensors:
PointGrab sensors require an internet connection to the cloud management system, with support for Wi-Fi 2.4GHz.
Run PoE cabled CAT 5 or higher from a PoE Switch to each sensor’s location, ensuring spare length for potential sensor location adjustments.
A PoE switch, subject to preference, should be available.
Whitelist all PointGrab sensor MAC addresses on your firewall.
Allow outbound communication to the CogniPoint Management Portal using:
Port 443 (http/TLS) for OTA Updates/Debug info to the specified PointGrab URLs:
Port 8883 (MQTT over TLS) for Configuration, Control, and Telemetry to:
https://not.pointgrab.com
Light Indication
During the physical installation, PointGrab sensors offer visual guidance on the sensor’s status, whether it’s powering up, not connected to the cloud, or not sending any data through, etc.
Here is a list of patterns we have identified so far and what status they adhere to:
Status | Color | Pattern |
Off | None | None |
Powering Up | Blue | Blinking |
Not connected to PointGrab Cloud | Yellow | Solid |
No network connection | Blue | Solid |
Connected to the cloud and sending data | None | None |
Note: These statuses and their patterns are only an indication. Depending on the sensor configuration, you may come across different patterns.
Sensor Placement Recommendations
Desks: Each desk island requires a specific number of PointGrab Cognipoint sensors placed on the ceiling above the desk island. These sensors provide binary data (occupied/available) and are PoE-powered (no gateway required).
Rooms: Each room requires a set number of PointGrab Cognipoint sensors, ceiling-mounted. They are PoE-powered (no gateway required) and can provide the following data depending on configuration:
Binary data (occupied/available)
People count data
Open Areas: A certain number of PointGrab Cognipoint sensors are required, placed on ceilings. These sensors offer people count data and are PoE-powered (no gateway required).
Note: The number of sensors needed depends on the ceiling height and floor plan. For instance, one sensor can cover up to 48m2 with a ceiling height of 3m.
